Biography

Joan GoldbergJoan R. Goldberg, principal and managing director of Strategic Assessment & Solutions LLC, brings 26 years of experience to the consultancy she founded in December 2011. Her focus is on:

  • Individual and organizational assessments

Goldberg has conducted or interpreted individual 360 evaluations for the the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA), and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as a subcontractor, and by direct contract for the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) and the Treatment & Learning Centers.  SAS organizational assessments include the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), the Optical Society, and the National Council for the Social Studies.

  • Individual and group coaching

Coaching clients include scientists, administrators, and leaders at all levels at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, SfN, the Optical Society, the American Society for Human Genetics, the University of Maryland, the Johns Hopkins University, the FDA, the HRSA, the Department of Transportation, the NTSB, the International Monetary Fund Family Association, etc.

  • Strategic planning facilitation (including surveys, interviews, environmental scans, analysis of trends, and development of agendas, strategic plans and work/implementation plans)

Goldberg has provided strategic planning services from data gathering and analysis to retreat facilitation to development of plans, replete with benchmarks, metrics, timelines, resources needed, and checkpoints. Clients include the Reinvention Collaborative (focused on undergraduate education), the University of Maryland’s Education Abroad program, the International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC), the Histochemical Society, the National Association for Veterans Administration Research and Education Foundations, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), and the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB).

  • Training workshops

SAS training workshops for such organizations as New America Foundation and the SfN focus on topics including giving and receiving feedback; building trust, conveying empathy and respect, and celebrating success; active listening; conflict resolution; anticipating needs and enhancing outcomes; setting and managing expectations and performance; making meetings more productive; stress management; change management; communication and presentation skills, etc.

Goldberg has also presented workshops at the NIH (on management), the International Monetary Fund (on marketing oneself), the American Chemical Society (on trends affecting nonprofit professional societies), the American Geophysical Union (on grant funding), the ASCB (on the importance of advocacy), the Association of Biomolecular Research Facilities (on advancing women’s careers in science), etc.

  • Leadership positions

Goldberg has served as interim executive director of the SCAI, the IASP, and the ISAC, as well as executive director of the ASCB and the ASBMR. Overlapping with her tenure at ASBMR, she was a group executive at SmithBucklin, the world’s largest association management company, where she had oversight of various professional societies. Prior to her position at ASBMR, Goldberg spent a dozen years in high level positions at the National Sleep Foundation, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and the Washington Psychiatric Society. In addition, she served in communications positions at Conde Nast, taught writing classes, wrote hundreds of articles and three books, and served as a spokesperson, appearing on NBC Nightly News, CNN, and in multiple other venues

She earned her undergraduate degree from Vassar College and her certification in leadership coaching from Georgetown University. She is also certified by the International Coach Federation at the advanced Professional Certified Coach level.
